MOCA Talks: Dragon of concrete jungles
Honoring AAPI Heritage Month, the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) cordially invites you to an engaging event as we celebrate the launch of Dragon of Concrete Jungles (美港潛龍), a captivating journey that chronicles the lives of Sifu Yip Wing Hong and his son Jeffrey Yip across the dynamic landscapes of Hong Kong and New York City.

🖼️ Attend a gallery tour of With a Single Step: Stories in the Making of America to immerse yourself in the long and nuanced history of the Chinese diaspora in the United States. Along the way, explore tools and strategies for incorporating Chinese American voices into your units of study.
👐 Participate in hands-on activities in MOCA’s special exhibition, Five Senses of Chinatown, to consider how to bring sensory and object-based inquiry into your classroom.

MOCA PRESENTS – Special Community Screening: The Race Epidemic
In partnership with the Asian Pacific American Leadership Foundation, the Museum of Chinese in America cordially invites you to a special AANHPI Heritage Month screening of the award-winning documentary, The Race Epidemic. Exercise ALL your senses with us at MOCA! Test your knowledge of sauces and spices, find places you recognize, and explore the neighborhood in a new way! Afterwards, join us for a fun MOCACREATE craft inspired by the exhibition. We’ll be crafting from 3 PM to 4 PM, so be ready with your best ideas.

MOCA COOKS with Clarissa WeiMade in Taiwan: Recipes and Stories from the Island Nation
Honoring Women’s History Month, the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) cordially invites you to a virtual discussion with Clarissa Wei, an acclaimed Taipei-based food journalist and author of Made in Taiwan: Recipes and Stories from the Island Nation. This event will illustrate the rich tapestry of Taiwanese cuisine and bring Taiwan’s distinct culinary identity to the forefront.
MOCA Performs – Emergence
Museum of Chinese in America launched its inaugural Performing-Artist-In-Residence program in summer 2023, and welcomed a cohort of 4 performing artists to generate a theme-based project. This year’s theme, The Past in the Present, encourages the resident artists to explore the legacies and traditions they’ve carried on and to create a project that reflects their identity, creativity, and inspirations.

This guided conversation will provide an insider’s perspective on the curatorial process and our cross-departmental collaboration, offering a unique understanding of how each element comes together to tell the multisensory stories of Chinatown.
MOCACREATE: Chinatown Soundscapes with Teaching Artist Yu Rong
What does Chinatown sound like? And what do those sounds look like? Join MOCA in making art inspired by the sounds of our neighborhood and our special exhibition, Five Senses of Chinatown. What color is the sound of a basketball game or the shuffling of mahjong tiles? Is a sizzling wok a straight line or a curvy line? Let’s find out together!
Paint, build, craft, and collage with us! Inspired by the museum’s exhibitions and local artists, MOCACREATE explores different themes every month. MOCACREATE workshops are designed with families in mind, but all are welcome!
MOCA Performs – Angel IslandA Multimedia Experience by Huang Ruo @ MOCA
Chinese American composer Huang Ruo debuts at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) with Angel Island, co-presented by BAM and the PROTOTYPE Festival, from January 11-13, 2024. This immersive multimedia performance, which melds opera, theater, dance, and music, revisits the significant yet harrowing history of the Angel Island Immigration Station in San Francisco Bay.

MOCA Performs – Emergence, Day 1
In this performance, Visual Theater Artist/Director MARIA CAMIA will present a puppetry project influenced by the Filipino culture. Ari and Cama’s Liberation! is a story about the land of Aricama being liberated. Theatre Artist/Filmmaker Nancy Ma will present a narrative project that explores her relationship with her mother, grief, and Chinatown.
MOCACREATE: Harvest Prints with Teaching Artist Yu Rong
What’s on your Thanksgiving table? Do you have turkey, duck, or hotpot… or maybe duck hotpot? Do you see lots of friends and family, or do you keep your celebration small? Share your Thanksgiving family traditions and add them to our communal table. Then make a harvest scene inspired by the season’s bounty using fruit and veggie scraps, foam, and other materials.
MOCA Presents – Mental Health Symposium 心理安康座談會
In light of the increasing distress since the peak of anti-Asian hate crimes, the Museum of Chinese in America continues its efforts to raise awareness of mental health and advocate for its importance to our individual and collective well-being through a series of public programs.
Topics of the symposium include:

How can we reduce the stigma of seeking mental health care?

Open House New York Weekend: Guided Tours of MOCA & Collections and Research Center
Open House New York Weekend is an annual festival that opens hundreds of noteworthy or significant places across the five boroughs to foster discovery and delight for New Yorkers and visitors alike. On October 20-22, 2023, the 21st annual OHNY Weekend festival will offer a mix of in-person experiences, self-guided explorations, and digital content—inviting you to get an insider’s look at everything from single rooms, studios, factories, and public spaces to entire buildings, blocks, bike corridors, and waterways.
Take a behind-the-scenes tour of MOCA’s Collections & Research Center and partake in a Q&A with Yue Ma, Director of the Collections and Research Center.
MOCA Workshop is the home base for MOCA’s fire recovery and conservation work, featuring state-of-the-art collections storage, a reference library, and digitization stations.

Nate Cozens, DEBUT @ MOCA
The Museum of Chinese in America is proud to welcome an aspiring playwright/director Nate Cozens to present a stage reading of his new play, DEBUT.
Nate Cozens (he/him) is a Filpino-American director and writer. He most recently directed a solo show titled Banana at Provincetown Theatre and I Like It Rough, a short play in National Queer Theatre’s Kinky Pint-Sized Plays.

MOCA TALKS with Professor Jean Pfaelzer and her book "California, a Slave State" @ MOCA
The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) presents its featured MOCA TALKS speaker Professor Jean Pfaelzer and her forthcoming book California, a Slave State, unveiling the untold history of slavery and resistance in California, from the Spanish missions, indentured Native American ranch hands, Indian boarding schools, Black miners, kidnapped Chinese prostitutes, and convict laborers to victims of modern trafficking.
Beyond These Walls: Material Cultures of Jewish and Chinese Detainees @ MOCA
The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) and the Center for Jewish History are pleased to present a panel discussion of the materials created by Jewish and Chinese detainees (Golden Venture Paper Sculptures) as they waited for entry into the United States. MOCA will bring select artifacts from its Golden Venture collection to be viewed during a dessert reception to follow the discussion.
Kindly note this event will be held off-site at the Center for Jewish History at 15 West 16th St. in Manhattan’s Union Square neighborhood.

The spirit and excitement of LGBTQIA+ Pride Month blooms in New York City. This year, the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) celebrates Pride Month with our PRIDE MIXER. Amidst a backdrop of increased attacks against members of the LGBTQIA+ community, especially in the form of legislation and physical violence that directly targets trans and BIPOC individuals, MOCA seeks to spotlight the power and resiliency of the community and its allies. Utilizing the Museum as a safe space for remembrance and resilience is now as necessary as ever.
